When GOOD THINGS BECOME GOD THINGS
An idol isn’t always some golden statue or obvious sin. Most of the time, it’s much more subtle.
An idol is anything that gets elevated above Jesus in my life. It’s the thing that grabs my attention, stirs my passion, and becomes the focus of my time and energy. And here’s the thing—it’s not always something bad. In fact, it’s often something good.
But when a good thing takes the place of the best thing, that’s when I know I’ve drifted.
The comforting part is this: I’m not saved because I always get it right—I’m saved by grace. So when I slip, God doesn’t give up on me. His Spirit gently convicts and calls me back to what matters most—Him.
I love how Lamentations 3:22–23 puts it:
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Even when I get distracted, His mercy meets me right where I am. And that gives me hope to start fresh—again and again.
